Second Task of the Course: The Flipped Classroom Assignment!
Hi everyone! I hope you are all good!
In this post, I am going to tell you the flipped classroom approach and our assignment related to it. So, let's start with the approach. In this approach, the teacher provides the students a digital video that introduces the content to them before the class. After they watched the video, there are some exercises for the learners to practice the content. And when they come to class, they again do another activity related to the content they learned; and of course, like everything, this approach has advantages and disadvantages. It provides the students advantages like learning the content in their own pace, rewinding the video when they cannot understand something, or providing the teachers the chance to provide individual support to students. However, there are also challenges. The teacher may not be sure if the students watched the video or not, or, there may be problems about some students' access to technology. Now, let's talk about the assignment we were supposed to do. For the assignment, we were to prepare a 3-4 minute digital video and follow-up questions as the pre-class activities, and another activity for in-class use. We prepared the materials for 5th graders. As Arda, Suvda and me, we taught the names of some countries, nationalities and languages spoken here. We selected them from the first unit of 5th grade English book (2021). We first selected the vocabulary, planned who were going to tell which part, and recorded both our voices and our image. In some trials, we couldn't pronounce the vocabulary well, so we had to record ourselves many times. We used Canva to create the digital video, and Wordwall to create the 25-question quiz. Finally, let me give you some information about the websites we used. Canva can be used to prepare presentations or, to create digital videos as we did, and Wordwall can be used for preparing activities for your class. Oh, I almost forgot to say, we used Google Docs to prepare the lesson plan, and Capcut to merge the parts of the video. Google Docs is used for online collaborative writing and Capcut is used for the purpose of merging the parts of a video or things like that.
In this section, I want to talk about the feedback we received from both the group whose work we evaluated and our instructor. Generally, we received positive feedback from the other group, only there were some problems about the smooth transition between the narrators and the length of the video. The length of the digital video should have been around 3 or 4 minutes, but our video was 8 minutes and 21 seconds. Our instructor told us that, considering Mayer's multimedia principle of the "segmenting principle", we could present the video in different segments whose pace the students can arrange according to their needs.
I looked at "flippedlearning.org" when writing the "segmenting principle" part in the paragraph I talked about the feedback we received from both our instructor and the other group. Here is the link of the website.

I thank my friends for their efforts for the assignment.
