3rd Assignment of the Course: AR/VR Integration into ELT

Hello everyone! I hope you are all good!

In this post, I am going to talk to you about our 3rd assignment of the course, which is about AR/VR integration into ELT. But, what is AR and VR? AR is a technology that enables you to see the digital content in the real world. So you see the digital content as if it's in your real environment. For example, you can go to IKEA app, and see how a chair looks like in your living room by allowing the app to use your device's camera. However, VR is a slightly different technology from AR, it is 3D environments that enable you to "interact with your surroundings and other users." (Kurt, 2025, p.14) Games like Minecraft or Roblox (Kurt, 2025, p.14) can be given as the examples of it. Now, let's talk about the assignment. For the assignment, we were supposed to create an augmented/virtual reality integrated teaching material for high school English prep. class students (A2 level). We prepared digital handouts in which they explore Paris. As Step 1, they explore one of the Paris's landmarks through a 360-degree virtual tour, and the other one through a 3D model, and later, they answer fact-based and personal questions about it. As Step 2, they explore a museum of the city through a virtual tour, and again they answer same type of questions. As Step 3, the students look at the 3D model of a food which belongs to French culture. As the 4th step and their final project, they create short photo captions about the food and places they explored. Now, I am going to mention to the process of preparing the handouts. The process was a little bit challenging for me because I did not know how to use the websites and also I have had some hardships when trying to find the 3D models or 360-degree tours. I want to finish my post with my reflection on it. In my opinion, AR/VR tools are very important for students to help them understand the content especially in a concrete way.

In this section, I want to mention our instructor's feedback on our assignment. Firstly, she told us that we should write "Let's go to Paris" instead of "Let's go to France" on the first page of the handout. Secondly, the instructor told us that we should add introductory questions on the same page. About the second page, she told us that the first question was not grammatical and said we should ask a question using only "feel" or "see." There was also a problem regarding the ASSURE plan. She told us that we should provide the answers of the questions on the ASSURE plan because the students cannot infer the answers by looking at the 3D model. But later, we wrote questions that do not require background knowledge , so we did not do any changes about that on the ASSURE plan. Another issue the instructor pointed out was that we should provide the answers/infos of the questions that the students can look at for checking their answers after working with the 3D model. About the balance of fact-based and personal questions, the instructor mentioned that the first two or three questions should be fact-based, and the last two been personal. About the page we put the museum on, the instructor said we can ask a question related to being a tour guide, like "If you were a tour guide..." The instructor also said we should not ask questions like "Do you think this place is big or small?" And lastly, she said that our page about the food was good, but we should add a title to the last page of the handout.
