First Task of the Course: Creating an AI-enhanced Corpus-based Teaching Material

Hello everyone, I hope you are all good!

In this post, I am going to talk to you about the first assignment of the course: Creating an AI-enhanced corpus-based teaching material. Corpus means "a large and systematically organized collection of texts or language samples that are digitally stored and exploited using specialized software" (Kurt, 2025, p.5). For the assignment, we were expected to create a teaching material that I mentioned in the first sentence and a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model. We were expected to prepare these two for the target group of EFL learners in a high school in Turkey. As Arda, Ozan and I, we chose the School Life theme from the preparatory year students' book called "Uptone" and chose to prepare the worksheet based on the topic of "must" and "have to". In the designing process of the worksheet, we followed Ma et al.'s principles for corpus-based learning and teaching materials. Firstly, the students assess their background knowledge with questions generated by ChatGPT (testing student knowledge). Then, there is a page in the worksheet that shows the students how to use the corpus, because, on the next page, we want them to search for different forms of "must" and "have to" on SKELL and compare these forms with each other (hands-on corpus searches by the students). Then, we want them to revise their notes they took while using SKELL and complete 10 "fill in the blank" questions regarding the rules about "must" and "have to". After that, they solve an 8 question paragraph exercise generated by ChatGPT. On the next page, we want the students to write 3 examples in 3 different forms of "must" and "have to". Then, we want them to write a short story using "must" and "have to" and also some words related to the School Life theme. (the output exercise) And, as the last exercise, the students play a Kahoot! game prepared by the teacher. And let's talk about the ASSURE plan. On the ASSURE plan, we wrote the details like our students' characteristics, their entry competencies and the technologies used in the classroom. As the last thing to say, I think our material can be easily implemented in a real classroom because the instructions are clear and the activities are engaging for the students.

I cited a sentence from the instructor's "AI-enhanced Corpus-based Language Pedagogy in Grammar and Vocabulary Teaching" slide to give information about corpus to my readers.

I thank my friends for their efforts for the assignment.

Here are their blog posts: Ozan, Arda

I couldn't put the first version of the worksheet because I forgot to take the screenshot of it. So, I only put the pages we modified and added.
